Finlay Coupar

All the work exhibited and on sale here has its origins in drawings of street debris trapped in gutters. Initially, these inspired a series of gouache paintings entitled ‘The Dreamlife of Debris’ (see images below) which explore and celebrate the pattern, colour and rhythms of the rubbish contained in the gratings.

“I was interested in progressing these ideas with a little more dimensional qualities but in materials with more substance. I had been considering using card in low relief for some time, (see example below in Totem No. 3) so the idea of card, patterned with ink-jet printed designs and cut to shape seemed to provide an appropriate approach. In the more recent versions, I have also used paint in order to achieve more flexibility with pattern and more substantially in colour.”
